What to do if your ELD is revoked
This page restates instructions FMCSA has published. It is not a guess at your case, and it is not legal advice. Check the device first. To choose a replacement that is still registered, use the switch guide.
What to do if this ELD is revoked
When FMCSA removes an ELD for failing the technical specifications in 49 CFR Appendix A to Subpart B of Part 395, its notices tell motor carriers and drivers to:
- Stop using the revoked ELD.
- Use paper logs, or logging software, to record the required hours of service.
- Replace it with a device that is still on the registered ELD list before the date in that notice. FMCSA has been giving about 60 days, and the date is written in the notice.
FMCSA says that on or after that date, continued use is a violation of 49 CFR 395.8(a)(1), “No record of duty status,” and the driver will be placed out of service under the CVSA out-of-service criteria. If the provider corrects the deficiencies, FMCSA says it will put the device back on the registered list and tell the industry.

The date on the revoked-device export is the removal date. The out-of-service date is the later date in the notice. ELD Watch does not add 60 days on its own.

Self-revoked is a different label
FMCSA’s export uses two status values: Revoked and Self-Revoked. Self-revoked means the provider took the device off the registry. The paper-log and out-of-service instructions above come from FMCSA’s own revocation notices. Read the notice that names your device before you treat a self-revoked row as if it had the same grace period.
