Motive vs Samsara
Both company names are registered-only on this export. The useful differences are the registry fields FMCSA actually filled in, and the hardware each vendor describes on its own site. The table is the comparison.

Hardware the vendor describes
- Motive ELD
- Motive’s Vehicle Gateway overview says the gateway is Motive’s FMCSA-registered ELD. It describes built-in cellular, an optional in-cab Wi-Fi hotspot, plug-and-play OBD-II for light-duty vehicles, and heavy-duty cables (J1939, J1708, RP1226, hardwired). Page updated July 14, 2026.
- Samsara
- Samsara’s ELD page says the Vehicle Gateway plugs into the diagnostic port. The same page says the Driver App connects to that gateway. “The Samsara Driver App is free and available on any supported iOS or Android device.”
Driver device the vendor names
- Motive ELD
- The pairing article says the Driver App connects over Bluetooth on Android and iOS. The recommended-devices article says Motive is compatible with most iOS and Android devices, and lists “Apple iOS OS: 16.0 and above” and “Google Android OS: 9.0 and above” as recommended operating systems. That list is what Motive says it has seen work well. It is not a complete compatibility certificate.
- Samsara
- “The Samsara Driver App is free and available on any supported iOS or Android device.” The page also says the app connects to the Vehicle Gateway. Supported iOS or Android is Samsara’s phrase. This export does not list phone models.

What the blank transfer cell means
SAMELD’s transfer cell says “Telematic (Web Service, Email).” SAMNI1’s cell is blank. Motive’s only row is blank. A blank cell means FMCSA’s export did not publish a transfer method for that row. It is not a finding that the device cannot transfer a file at roadside.
The registered export also has no registration date, so this page does not compare how long either device has been listed. FMCSA does not endorse devices on the registered list. Motive Technologies, Inc. and Samsara Inc. are the company names on these rows.
Price and contract
Checked October 21, 2026. Samsara’s pricing page asks how many vehicles or assets you have. It does not list an ELD price or a contract length. Motive’s pricing URL redirects to a contact form and does not list a price or a contract length. There is no cheaper choice between them on the public record.
Read the device pages before you treat the brand as the thing you would install: Motive ELD, Samsara ELD, and Samsara ELD for International Trucks.
