How to spot a sketchy ELD

Two patterns are visible in FMCSA’s own files before you pay. A symbol at the start of a name moves that name to the top of an A–Z list. A recent self-revocation means the provider took that device off the registry. Neither pattern is a fraud finding. Both are reasons to read the ELD ID.

Data from FMCSA, updated October 20, 2026 (US Eastern).

Name starts with a symbol

What this export shows
19 names. Prefixes: " (10), ! (4), . (4), # (1). 16 still registered, 3 self-revoked.
What it does not show
Not an FMCSA ranking, not a revocation, and not proof of fraud. It only changes alphabetical order.

Provider self-revoked it recently

What this export shows
46 self-revoked devices have a revocation date in 2026. 4 self-revoked rows have no date, so they are not in that count.
What it does not show
Not the same label as FMCSA Revoked. Another model from the same company may still be registered.

Same company name, mixed status

What this export shows
50 company names have both a registered row and a revoked or self-revoked row.
What it does not show
Not proof the registered model is noncompliant. Check the ELD ID on the invoice against the device page.

Names that start with !A1

These are the device names on this export that start with “!A1”. The exclamation mark is why they sort ahead of names that start with a letter.

Every symbol-prefixed name

Quotation marks, exclamation points, periods, and a hash sign are the prefixes in this file. Open the device page before you treat the top of the A–Z list as a recommendation.

Questions

Does a name that starts with !A1 mean FMCSA ranked it first?
No. FMCSA’s list is alphabetical. A symbol such as ! sorts before the letter A, so the name appears near the top. On the export updated October 20, 2026, 19 device names start with a character that is not a letter or number. 16 of those rows are still registered and 3 are self-revoked. The symbol is not a revocation and it is not an endorsement.
What is a self-revocation?
FMCSA’s revoked export uses two status values: Revoked and Self-Revoked. Self-revoked means the provider removed the device. This export has 46 self-revoked devices with a revocation date in 2026, and 4 self-revoked rows with no date. A self-revoked row is not the same label as an FMCSA revocation. Read the notice before you treat the deadlines as identical.
Should I avoid a company that also has a revoked model?
The dataset has 50 company names with at least one registered row and at least one revoked or self-revoked row. That is a reason to match the ELD ID you would buy. It is not, by itself, a finding that the registered model fails the rule.
